 Our Rural Heartland
  Dannevirke

cow_eating_grass_lg_clr.gif image by RoseD1

Dannevirke is the center of a rural district but, like all rural districts, the weather plays a big part in shaping each year’s returns. The hinterland, once timber and bush clad were cleared, with a range of environments and soilt ypes now support dairy, deer, sheep and beef farming.
Today stock numbers have declined following summer droughts on the East Coast, although neighbouring districts to the north and south on the East Coast were more affected. Some farmers have de-stocked to ensure enough grass growth for their remaining progeny. While store stock has sold above recent averages, it has also meant high prices to buy in new stock. As Dannevirke is a rural center, a large number of people live on life-style blocks: enjoying a quiet life outside work hours in town, attending their smaller number of livestock.

Dannevirke Stock Sale
Thursday 4th March 2010

Prices were very firm at today’s Dannevirke lamb and ewe sale.
This was especially evident in the medium store lambs yarded and sold against strong bidding, PGG Wrightson auctioneer Bjorn Andersen said.
There were 20 main prime pens of lambs and ewes, and 26 pens of store lambs.
The stores included an annual draft of coastal lambs from the coastal Owahanga Station which, having been off the grass for three days while they were shorn before being trucked to town and held overnight at the yards, pleased station manager Tom Fleming. Five of the six pens sold for more than $70 a head with the other pen, ewe lambs, making $66.80.
Top price for store lambs was $86.50 for the Norman Partnership’s 94 cryptorchids that made $86.50 a head.

Facial Eczema spore counts on the rise.

"The reason for the rise has come as a result of the rain and the  humid conditions parts of the country are experiencing

Infected animals display signs of photosensitisation and look distressed. The first signs are often reddening and swelling of skin exposed to the sun (i.e. around the eyes, ears, lips, nose and udder) as well as restlessness, shaking and rubbing of the head and ears, and the seeking of shade.

Common techniques for preventing facial eczema include giving zinc oxide by regular oral drenching, zinc sulphate via the water supply, intra-runimal long-acting boluses, and spraying pasture with fungicide.

About facial eczema

Facial eczema affects sheep and cattle (and to a lesser extent goats and deer) throughout the North Island and northern end of the South Island. Historically these have been the most prone areas however changing weather patterns are resulting in facial eczema being evidenced in wider locations. It is responsible for serious production losses with affected stock suffering liver and skin damage, which together contribute to ill-thrift, reduced fertility, reduced milk production, and in severe cases death. Warm, humid conditions support the growth of a fungus (Pithomyces chartarum) in pasture which produces a toxin (sporidesmin) that poisons the liver. As the liver cannot get rid of phylloerythrin, a chlorophyll breakdown product, it circulates in the blood. Phylloerythrin releases energy when exposed to sunlight causing skin damage similar to severe sunburn.
