Dannevirke is the center of a rural district but, like all rural districts, the weather plays a big part in shaping each year’s returns. The hinterland, once timber and bush clad were cleared, with a range of environments and soilt ypes now support dairy, deer, sheep and beef farming.
Today stock numbers have declined following summer droughts on the East Coast, although neighbouring districts to the north and south on the East Coast were more affected. Some farmers have de-stocked to ensure enough grass growth for their remaining progeny. While store stock has sold above recent averages, it has also meant high prices to buy in new stock. As Dannevirke is a rural center, a large number of people live on life-style blocks: enjoying a quiet life outside work hours in town, attending their smaller number of livestock.

FEED OUTLOOK
Some farms I have visited lately are feeling the effects of the dry autumn. There is roughage about, but for some properties the likely feed availability over coming months will be insufficient especially approaching lambing and calving unless we get a number of weeks of warm weather and the soil temperatures stay at their current level. Many farmers faced this situation with the previous three autumn droughts. Ewe body condition deteriorated rapidly through the winter. Breeding cows struggled and there were a number of cases of high stock deaths. Stock Losses – late pregnancy to early lactation is a high risk period. Starvation induced animal health problems, as well as internal and external parasites were all big problems in the previous droughts.

Some potential options to avoid a feed deficit this winter and spring -
You need to know your current situation. Do a feed budget. It’s simple supply vs.demand! (See details below for help on doing a feed budget).
Cut your losses – Trading stock and store stock are worth good money this year insure that you are not impacting on your capital stock by holding onto lambs etc - money in the bank is better than capital stock dying.
Prioritise stock classes for destocking and put in place ‘trigger points’: male lambs, surplus ewe lambs, aged ewes, empty cows, trading cattle etc
Consider grazing stock out, supplements or nitrogen to fill a feed deficit
Think about what classes of stock you can tighten up in the early part of pregnancy to conserve feed for later

Carwyn (Monty) Monteith 2010  New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year

The winners of the 2010 New Zealand Sharemilker of the Year, Stefan and Annalize du Plessis, the 2010 New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year, Carwyn Monteith, and the 2010 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year, Blake Korteweg, were announced at the national awards dinner at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua last Friday night.
Thirty-six finalists representing 12 regions across the country competed in the final, and represented the best from more than 500 entries received in the three 2010 awards competitions.

The 2010 New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year, Carwyn (Monty) Monteith, aged 38, won $18,400 in cash and prizes, and came out on top in an extremely close competition.

Head judge David Whillans says there was a strong field of finalists demonstrating a high level of excellence on farms.

“There are a lot of young people that have got into the dairy industry from other industries who are doing very well and they are really passionate about what they are doing.

“Carwyn has got life skills external to dairy farming, so brings a whole wealth of experience and maturity to his role,” Mr Whillans says. “He displayed a comprehensive knowledge across all areas we judged and this was supported with good processes and documentation. He had an excellent human resources policy, employing on attitude and training on skill.”

Mr Monteith also had good financial processes in place and clear goals on where he and his wife are headed and how they will get there. They have secured a sharemilking position for the new season on the 188ha Takapau farm milking 515 cows that they currently manage.
