 Our Rural Heartland
  Dannevirke

Dannevirke is the center of a rural district but, like all rural districts, the weather plays a big part in shaping each year’s returns. The hinterland, once timber and bush clad were cleared, with a range of environments and soilt ypes now support dairy, deer, sheep and beef farming.
Today stock numbers have declined following summer droughts on the East Coast, although neighbouring districts to the north and south on the East Coast were more affected. Some farmers have de-stocked to ensure enough grass growth for their remaining progeny. While store stock has sold above recent averages, it has also meant high prices to buy in new stock. As Dannevirke is a rural center, a large number of people live on life-style blocks: enjoying a quiet life outside work hours in town, attending their smaller number of livestock.

Wimbledon and Dannevirke Ewe Fair
Thursday 12th January 2012

Record prices were fetched at today’s Wimbledon and Dannevirke Ewe Fair, held at the saleyards in town, with the first pen of 728 Taumata Station, Wairere bred, two tooth Romney ewes selling for $295 a head.

Agents and vendors were more than pleased with the outcome, with around half the well presented pens fetching $200 plus a head.

There were a large number of buyers from the lower North Island, plus one from Canterbury who bought two tooth ewes for $231 a head. Top pice at the former Waipukurau ewe fair, held at Stortford Lodge on Tuesday was $270 and a sale average $235.

Dannevirke PGG Wrightson manager, Roger Watts, said the record prices reflected the shortage of sheep numbers needed to increase stocking rates on farms, especially with the current good grass growth in the North Island. Overall, lambing percentages have also been down the last two years.

There was no prime section today.

Dannevirke Stock Sale
Thursday 10th November 2011

Buyer attendance and prices increased in leaps and bounds at yesterday’s sale – the only negative was the drop in Dannevirke’s temperature to 11 degrees.

There was much interest in the first large draft of black faced Tautane Station  lambs (Herbertville) which sold strongly – despite being drenched by an inch of rain overnight in the Dannevirke holding paddocks, after three days of mustering, drafting and transport into town.

With their listing, plus other good lines of lambs and also a good entry for the Spring Cattle Fair that followed, ``the first Spring Fair was more than satisfactory,’’ PGG Wrightson livestock manager Roger Watts said.

Prime ewe prices were also up, with the best selling from $130 to $145.

Top woolly two and four tooth ewes made from $135 to $146.50; four tooth to five year also made top money at $135 tops, down to $85. There were a few pens of rams, m/a and woolly, which ranged from the $90`s to $85. Mixed aged ewes made $117 and $116 for two pens and a good pen of 26 well-shorn ewes fetched $122.
The store section saw the number of buyers, vendors and onlookers quadruple on recent months, with the first big draft (3133 head) of new season’s black faced lambs from Tautane Station (Herbertville) yarded.

The mixed sex lambs, which had been in the station yards for two days to be weaned and drafted before being trucked to town on Wednesday to overnight in the holding paddocks – drenched with an inch of rain – still looked `chipper’ when selling started.

Apart from one line being split, the others were bought outright, with the top pen fetching $135 a head, just a dollar less than two other pens of well presented older ewes.

Store details: A.K. and M.A. Brislane, 418 five year ewes $118; Bowood Farm, 77 m/a shorn Romney ewes $136; Pipibank Station, 19 four tooth – five year woolly ewes $136; Tautane Station, 566 b/f lbs $135, 566 b/f lbs $128, 400 b/f lbs $119.50, 430 b/f lbs $119, 829 b/f lbs $105, 342 b/f lbs $91.

Girvan Farm, 120 m/s lbs $122.50, 57 Poll Dorset / b/f x lbs $110; Rakanui P/ship, 61 hgts with lbs teeth $116; Pipibank Station, 35 ewe hgts with lbs teeth $115, 10 fresh two tooths $98; Waipunga, 13 m/s hgts, lbs teeth $114.50; unlisted, two hgts with lbs teeth $87.

Yesterday’s sale also included a consignment of weaner pigs, which sold from $61 to $81 for the top three.

Thursday 8th September 2011

Prices remained firm for good lines of prime lambs and ewes at today’s Dannevirke stock sale and the prime yarding was the largest for some weeks.

And a sign that spring is here, the first pen for the season of 10 store ewes with single lambs at foot fetched $73 all counted, sold by Elders on account of Sherwood Station.

Another sign, this time of the impending World Cup Rugby tournament, was the interest four visiting Springbok players took in the sale, especially the two who farm at home.

Heinrich Brussow, Jannie Du Plessis, Bismark Du Plessis and Willem Alberts took a short break from their training routine in Wellington to visit Dannevirke, staying with a Dannevirke farming friend.

While the top prime lambs sold strongly, they commented that (allowing for the exchange rate) prices per kilogram seemed lower than they’d expect at home.

Top prime lambs ranged from $161 to $190, medium $138 to $152. Two and fresh fours $131 to $135.50, lighter $106. Best of the ewes, many lines with a full fleece, sold from $119.50 to $139, medium $101 to $115, lighter $75.
